Irbesartan


Irbesartan/ Avapro, Karvea

Classifications: Angiotensin II receptor blocker(ARB)           Preg Risk D

Action: anti -hypertensive. Inhibits angiotensin II by blocking the binding of angiotensin II to angiotensin on the serface of  vascular smooth muscle.

Adverse reactions:

  CNS: fatigue, anxiety, dizziness, headache

    CV: chest pain, oedema, tachycardia

     GI: diarrhoea, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting

     GU: UTI

    Metabolic: increased potassium level

    Musculoskeletal: musculoskeletal trauma or pain

     Respiratory: URT infection

     Skin: rash

Drug-drug: potassium sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, salt substitutes, risk of hyperkalaemia.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity

Care considerations: Alert- use during pregnancy can cause injury and death to developing fetus.

Use with caution in people with impaired renal function, heart failure and renal artery stenosis and in breast feeding women.

May be administered with a diuretic or other antihypertensive

Symptomatic hypotension may occur in volume or salt depleted individuals

If hypotension occurs, place in supine position and give an IV infusion of 0.9% NaCl

Dose

Teaching: alert on discontinuation if pregnant, can take without regard to eating food
